Sometimes we can all get too caught up in the measurables when trying to guess a high school player’s ability to transition to the college level. After all, recruiting has proven to be a completely inexact science time and again.

Such may be the case with three-star Alabama recruit Marcel Dareus.

The interesting thing, however, about this 6-foot-4, 277-pound defensive tackle from Huffman High School in Birmingham is that both his size and performance on the field have been stellar, making the fact that he dropped to three-star status (Rivals) somewhat hard to understand. He wasn't exactly unimpressive last season, notching 117 tackles and a whopping 20 sacks as a senior. Further, he blocked seven kicks, accrued 10 sacks, and recovered three fumbles as a junior.

More than impressive, huh?

On top of it all, Dareus’ 4.95 speed in the 40 and overall quickness would indicate that he has the athleticism to play end, much less defensive tackle (the position he is projected to play in college).

The stats and measurables seem to prove that Dareus is better than a three-star prospect. Moreover, he has the size and strength to control blockers while still maintaining a fast first step.

Three stars aside, don’t be surprised if Dareus gets some time right off the bat for the Tide.
