When Alabama head coach Nick Saban hired Joe Pendry in 2007 to serve as the Tide's assistant head coach (offense) and offensive line coach, it was viewed as a smart decision. After all, what college football team wouldn’t want a guy with 17 years of NFL coaching experience on its staff? Beyond the clear advantage that the presence of Pendry gives the Tide on the recruiting trail is that he has dealt with highly complex offenses and defenses at the highest level.

While in the NFL, Pendry was an offensive coordinator, among other things, for four franchises in parts of three decades. He also served in similar capacities in the USFL with the Pittsburgh Maulers (head coach) and Philadelphia Stars, not to mention in college with Michigan State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Kansas State.

Cming into his second season with the Tide, having high expectations for Pendry and the offensive line he works with isn’t crazy. Along its front five, Alabama current has senior center Antoine Caldwell and Playboy Preseason All-America left tackle Andre Smith to go along with Drew Davis (OT), Mike Johnson (OG) and Marlon Davis (OG). Not exactly a weak bunch, eh?. The fact that 2008 super recruits Tyler Love, John Michael Boswell and Barrett Jones are coming in only reinforces the talent level.

In the end, a coach with the experience of Pendry will always want to be put in a position where he can be successful; he’s been around long enough to deserve that much. Considering the Tide's O-line talent, Pendry ought to experience plenty of success this season.
