Alabama center Antoine Caldwell has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy, an award given to the best lineman in America, as well as the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation’s premier center. What's more, Caldwell was a captain last season for the Crimson Tide.

Caldwell is also very smart. Beyond the fact that he helps call assignments at the line of scrimmage is that he impressively graduated from Alabama in under three years.

So what do you do when you're a talented football player with great intelligence? If you're Caldwell, you write.

Caldwell will be one of 22 players who will write a weekly piece this fall for Sporting News Today, a digital sports publication set to debut July 23. His column will begin during the week of July 26 and will cover topics ranging from upcoming games to life as a student-athlete.

This is a good idea for Caldwell, who could find himself playing in the NFL after this year. If that ends up being the case, having penned a column will give him insight into what makes media members tick. He’ll know, to an extent, how they come up with a good story; by the same token, he’ll learn to understand in a more specific way, perhaps, what to say while being interviewed, which is always a good thing to know while participating in the media juggernaut that is pro football.

Moreover, writing could open up a door or two for Caldwell later in life as a journalist. That's not a bad thing.
