Golden West College (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tight end Stanley Malamala signed with Arizona State on Friday and will play this season. The 6-foot-4, 254-pounder chose the Sun Devils over Oregon, UNLV, Utah, Boise State and Texas A&M.

"I like the offense they play," Malamala said. "It's a big campus, and I like the coaches. I wanted to stay in the Pac-10.”

“He's good in the passing game, runs very good routes, has soft hands and good speed for his size,” Golden West coach Nick Mitchell said. “He's a smart, football savvy kid. We did a lot of different stuff with him in a pro-style offense. He played the tight end position. We also put him in at H-back and some fullback, moved him around, had him in motion and in the slot at times. He was very versatile for what we do."

Malamala is the 28th player to sign for the 2008 class.

COMMENTARY: Malamala may get some playing time because Arizona State has open issues at the tight end position. But given his versatility, he may be moved to another position entirely.
