It was a whirlwind of controversy for Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. To take over the Razorbacks, he had to leave the NFL's Atlanta Falcons without even a full season under his belt. The way he did it -- via a letter to his players -- certainly left something to be desired. That said, no one is even going to care about that in the end if Petrino does at Arkansas what he did with the Louisville Cardinals.

That is, win.

Of course, winning is as much about the players as it is about a coaching scheme. Thus, recruiting becomes a central issue.

With that, let’s take a look at the verbal commitments the Razorbacks have acquired from the 2009 class thus far.

Colby Berna: This 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive guard and four-star recruit from Fayetteville runs the 40 yard dash in 5.1 seconds. The scoop on him is easy to deliver: Berna is smart (3.4 GPA) and aggressive.

Turell Williams: The 6-2, 215-pound running back from West Helena, Ark., runs the 40 in 4.5. On one hand, the Razorbacks have to be stoked that he’s chosen to commit to them. On the other, the fact that he turned his back on a former Ole Miss commitment to do so has to have their radar up.

Last season, Williams rushed for over 1,500 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Darius Winston: Winston is a 6-0, 180-pound five-star cornerback from West Helena, Ark., who runs the 40 in 4.4. Winston -- thanks to his speed, fluidity and strength -- currently occupies the 19 spot on the Rivals100 of 2009.

Last season in high school, Winston managed 40 tackles and two interceptions against clubs that tended to shy away from his general direction.
