When Brandon Heavens, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound athlete from Bessemer, Ala., committed to the Auburn Tigers, the coaches had to be happy. After all, despite his diminutive size, Heavens had totaled over 2,000 all-purpose yards as a junior in high school.

Moreover, he possesses 4.43 speed.

But then last Sunday came and went, and now the Tigers' coaches have to be more than happy. In fact, they must be downright excited; after all, two more truly versatile athletes decided to commit to Auburn.

Think that Tony Franklin’s spread offense, the kind that puts a premium on versatile skill-position players, had something to do with it?

Of course.

LaDarius Perkins, a 5-9, 180-pounder from Greenville, Miss., with 4.4 speed was the first to decide to attend Auburn this past Sunday. Then later in the day, another all-purpose player -- Travante Stallworth -- jumped on the bandwagon.

Last season in high school, Stallworth racked up 1,340 yards receiving and another 940 on the ground. Stallworth, 5-10, 180who stands 5-foot-10 inches and weighs 180 pounds, also has 4.4 speed.

The bottom line is that over the past few seasons, the Tigers haven’t exactly had a ton of playmakers on offense. Times are changing, it seems.
