The Auburn Tigers -- usually a team that gains the majority of its verbal commitments later in the year -- are setting a blistering pace much earlier this season, having already secured 17 student-athletes for the 2009 class.

With that said, let’s get to thinking what they’ve got on their plate so far; not so much in terms of players but positions.

Thus far, the Tigers have gotten positive verbal confirmation from three linebackers -- Jonathan Evans, Eltoro Freeman, Harris Gaston -- all of whom should serve to shore up a position that they've experienced success. They’re also chock-full at defensive tackle, having secured Jamontay Pilson, Nick Fairley and Terrence Coleman.

At first glance, the Tigers have only grabbed one definite wide receiver in LaVoyd James. But that’s really only a mirage, as the three athletes they’ve picked up -- Travante Stallworth, LaDarius Perkins and Brandon Heavens -- might all play the position. When you consider how needed speed, quickness and agility are at the receiver position in a spread offense, which Auburn runs, those in the know at the program have to feel really good about the possibilities.

The team has only pulled in one running back (Rodney Scott) and one quarterback (Raymond Cotton) to date. However, considering the athletes they’ve gotten and the kind of position quarterback is, the Tigers have to feel fine with that right now.

Two offensive linemen -- Andre Harris and Aaron Moore -- have gone Auburn's way. Then there’s tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, recent defensive back acquisition Reggie Harris, and defensive end Wilfred Journet.

In the end, Auburn is doing a terrific job with respect to picking up athletes. Sure, the Tigers could probably use a few more defensive backs, ends and offensive linemen. But they're still early in the game.

With how things have gone so far, fans have to be happy with Tommy Tuberville and company.
