With Auburn having gained a recent verbal commitment from Lilburn, Ga., inside linebacker Brandon Jacobs, it's worth saying that the Tigers could have a downright frightening LB corps come 2009.

The team has a ton of up-and-coming linebacker talent, evidenced by the remainder of this column.

Brandon Jacobs: The 6-foot1, 230-pound Jacobs runs the 40 in 4.52 seconds, bench presses 335 pounds, squats 570 pounds, and possesses a 34-inch vertical leap. What’s more, he accrued 75 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions on defense last season to go along with 950 yards rushing on offense.

Jonathan Evans: This 6-foot, 205-pounder OLB from Prichard, Ala., has 4.5 speed, a 285-pound bench press and a 505-pound squat. He recorded 104 tackles, five sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and two interceptions last season for his high school team.

Eltoro Freeman: Freeman committed to the club last season but was ineligible, leading him to Gulf Coast Community College, where he totaled 65 tackles, including 17 for a loss, and five sacks through 11 games. Freeman could quite possibly be the most talented player of this entire group.

Harris Gaston: The 6-2, 210-pound OLB from Bessemer, Ala., has 4.6 speed, and he tallied 112 tackles, 11 sacks and five interceptions last year.

Auburn’s record-setting recruiting pace so far this year has netted the program some excellent talent at the linebacker position. Of course, one thing that head coach Tommy Tuberville also stresses when it comes to recruiting is character.

Therefore, the guess is that these guys will be good teammates as well, which is perhaps as important as anything else.
