It’s no secret that the Auburn Tigers have been gobbling up verbal commitments like candy since last season ended. Though four and five stars aren’t always attached to their names, that isn’t by chance: Head coach Tommy Tuberville does recruiting his way; in other words, he takes into account character and heart to the extent that he and his staff can measure it just as much as the stars next to to a recruit’s name.

That said, Cross City, Fla., running back commit Rodney Scott is the exception to that rule. After all, he's a four-star player.

The problem is that Rivals considers Scott a soft verbal commitment. Translation: He still could enroll elsewhere.

Scott runs the 40 in a speedy 4.4 seconds, so he has the speed to compete at the SEC level. He also possesses the athleticism, demonstrated by his whopping 37-inch vertical leap. Then there’s the fact that he benches 300 pounds.

Of course, all of that means nothing without production -- which hasn't lacked in Scott’s case.

Evidence is that he rushed for 2,017 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. In sum, the only thing missing from his skill set would appear to be size -- Scott is only 185 pounds -- but there have been plenty of similarly built college running backs who have done quite well in the past.

The problem for Auburn is that Scott has noted significant interest in attending Ole Miss and South Florida. Word is that he’s also thinking about South Carolina. In fact, the indecision is so great that Scout.com doesn’t even presently list Scott as an Auburn commit.

Without question, how this develops will be interesting.
