Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville made a surprise decision when he chose to bring Tony Franklin and the spread offense to town during the offseason. Then, on Wednesday, he made another surprise call, deciding to part ways with the coordinator midway through the season.

“It hurts,” Tuberville said after practice on Wednesday. “It hurts bad. That’s a difficult situation, a difficult thing to do in the middle of the season. My responsibility is to this football team and it always will be.

"Basically, when it all comes down to it, it comes down to production. And I didn’t think the last few weeks we were making any progress.”

Afterward, Franklin continued to be candid and tried to look unhurt. “Y’all look like you got fired,” he joked with reporters. “Better me than you.”

Now here’s the interesting part. Despite dropping Franklin, Tuberville said that “[We’re] not going to change our philosophy. It’s a good offense, our guys like it and understand it. They’re getting better at it.”

The question is: Will the Tigers really keep the spread? On one hand, Tuberville said his players are getting a better understanding of the offense. On the other, he said that the club wasn’t making any progress, which is one of the reasons he cited for dropping Franklin. Which is it?

Probably hard for even him to know right now.

In the end, this move leaves a lot of question marks. How much spread will Auburn fans really see in the coming weeks? Is Kodi Burns the likely guy to take over for good at quarterback now that the Chris Todd-Franklin connection has been severed? Commits like QB Raymond Cotton seem to be staying put, but how long will that with Franklin gone?

Lots of questions now, lots of answers later.
