Entering weekend game against the Auburn Tigers, Ole Miss cornerbacks had managed a measly one interception on the season. Further, Arkansas torched them through the air the week prior. While Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino is an offensive guru, his team isn't exactly a powerhouse. In other words, the climate was ripe for a Kodi Burns breakout game if there was ever going to be one.

In the end, there were two tales for Auburn’s Burns on the day. On one hand, he completed 27 of 44 passes for 319 yards. By itself, that looks awful good.

Unfortunately, there is always a flip side when you talk about this 2008 Tigers team. In this case, the other side of the story refers to the three interceptions Burns threw against a team not known for getting them; worse, Auburn scored only seven points in a 17-7 defeat, falling to 4-5.

It just never adds up for this Auburn offense. And at a college where the expectations are high every season, you have to wonder if Burns and the offense are able to find the positives in a season with so few. After all, college football teams are measured by wins and losses, not phrases like, “nice job, but …”

This season is almost certainly going to be deemed a failure in many ways for Auburn’s football team. Because of that, they’re just going to have to find that silver lining wherever they can. It’s going to be important for the coaches to somehow foster that, as the past has proven that ruined confidence early in a career -- let’s say with Burns -- can last an entire college football career.

Of course, if the Tigers can somehow ruin the Alabama Crimson Tide’s national championship hopes with an Iron Bowl win, that silver lining is going to be much easier to find.
