When the Auburn Tigers hired Gene Chizik to be their head coach, fans didn’t immediately start dancing in the streets.

Now he’s been hired over the likes of Turner Gill, Chizik has something to prove to the Tigers’ faithful. Unfortunately, now that former Auburn defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads has taken the head coaching job at Iowa State, the place that Chizik managed a 5-19 overall record, there is even more to prove.

Chizik was only able to manage a 2-10 record this past season leading the Cyclones. If Rhoads does more for them early in his tenure, the rumblings will start that perhaps Auburn should have looked to him for its head job. Of course, that will all depend on how Chizik does early on, too.

The point is, these two will be compared for the rest of their careers at their prospective schools.

Regardless, the hiring served as a homecoming for Rhoads, who grew up in nearby Ankeny as the son of an Iowa high school football coach. He also served as an assistant at Iowa State under Dan McCarney from 1995-99. By the way, Chizik was formerly Auburn's defensive coordinator.

Kind of eerie, no?
