Let’s face it, the past two college football seasons have not exactly been stellar for the Auburn Tigers. Last season’s losing record was just the culmination of a downward trend. Perhaps the lessons of the past need to be heeded today. In other words, whether it’s the West Coast or spread offense, the Tigers must run the ball to have a shot at winning the SEC in 2009.

If that’s the case, then maybe the Tigers took a step in that direction when Tampa, Fla., four-star dual-threat quarterback (projected running back) Dontae Aycock decided to sign a letter of intent to play for them in 2009.

First, Aycock seems to have enough speed to get the job done in the backfield. After all, a 4.5-second 40-yard dash isn’t bad. But the 5-foot-10, 216-pounder hasn’t even gotten the chance yet in his career to exclusively focus on running the ball. Along with this, he managed 950 yards passing and five touchdowns as a junior QB. As a senior, he improved on that to the tune of 1,491 yards through the air and 17 touchdowns.

In other words, Aycock is an athlete. Unfortunately, he’s not a tall athlete; that makes him a good running back candidate.

As a junior, Aycock managed 1,110 yards and 22 touchdowns running the ball. He then put up 1,406 yards and a whopping 28 scores during his senior year.

Consider Aycock a player who will almost assuredly help the Tigers in the future. Expect to hear a lot from him in the coming years.
