With coordinator Gus Malzahn set to lead the Auburn offense in 2009, the hope is that improvements will be made. That means talented players will be put in positions to use their athletic gifts to make impacts.

One of those talented players is tight end Tommy Trott (a 6-foot-5, 251-pound senior), who came to the Tigers as a four-star recruit back in 2005 from Trinity High School in Montgomery, Ala. In high school, he proved that he could catch the ball and make plays. But he's never broken out with Auburn.

Trott caught only four balls for 35 yards in 2007. He was better in '08, securing 20 catches for 201 yards. Of course, the whole Auburn offense sputtered over the past couple of seasons, and Trott was no different. Along with this, their quarterbacks just couldn’t get things going in the passing game.

But here’s the reality: Trott’s a senior. It’s time for him to come up big. It’s now or never, actually.

The good thing is that there’s reason to believe that Trott will finally have a big year. First, Malzahn has a proven track record and innovative ideas. Next, Trott had 11 catches over the course of the last four games he played in 2008, indicating that he was perhaps heating up.

Unfortunately, Trott missed the final game of the season, the Iron Bowl against Alabama, because of a torn ACL and had surgery at the end of the campaign. On one hand, he should be healthy coming into the 2009 season. On the other, spring practice is in jeopardy.

Regardless, the Tigers need playmakers on offense, and Trott should be one of those guys. If he isn't, why not let the better blocking Gabe McKenzie start?

This is a big year for Trott.
