Tez Doolittle, one of Auburn's starting defensive tackles from 2008, graduated. The other, Sen’Derrick Marks, departed early for the NFL. That leaves some question marks in Auburn for new defensive line coach Tracy Rocker to deal with. Sure, redshirt freshmen Derrick Lykes and Andre Wadley will be given a chance to impress. Yes, recruits Jamar Travis and Terrance Coleman will try to make an impact early.

But for now, let’s talk a little bit about the 2009 starting defensive tackle possibilities with real collegiate experience.

Mike Blanc: Right now, Blanc is listed as one of the starters, though no one’s job is safe. This 6-foot-4, 287-pound junior started his career with the Tigers being named a second-team All-American by Sporting News. He was also named the Most Improved Defensive Lineman by the Auburn coaches in spring practice before the 2007 season. Blanc started six games and managed 27 total tackles (1.5 sacks) on the season in 2008. He would seem to be a favorite to secure a starting position in 2009.

Zach Clayton: Clayton only started one game in 2008, but he still amassed 22 tackles and 4.5 sacks on the season. Though he’s listed behind Blanc right now, don’t be surprised if he makes a push at one of the tackle positions. Clayton has the ability to make plays in the backfield.

Jake Ricks: Ricks is currently listed as the starter at the other defensive tackle position for the Tigers. Coming out of high school, the 6-4, 300-pound senior was considered one of the best offensive tackles in the nation. But he switched to the defensive side for the Tigers. Ricks has only seen limited action in his time at Auburn. Playing in all 13 contests in 2008, he put up seven total tackles. He needs to step it up in order to stay in a starting spot.
