There’s a feeling that hits the pit of the stomach after losing a football game. Something of a combination of sharp pain, queasiness and dread. Questions and “what ifs?” fly through the mind and the only way to halt all that is to focus on the next game.

When the next game comes and “loss” is the outcome, the pain returns, the queasiness wells back up and the dread magnifies. Then, it’s time to focus on the next game, with more “what ifs?” and “how cans?” buzzing through the mind.

For Auburn, this has to be playing out with many of the team members and personnel. The worst of it all, is that there is no next opponent to concentrate on, yet the allure of off season forgetfulness isn’t there either. Auburn will have another game this season, another opponent to prepare for and another chance to end the year on a high note. Trouble is, that opponent and game remain a mystery.

Sure, rumors are rampant that the Tigers will play in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. Other rumors and predictions have them in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl, while others still place them in Capital One Bowl. The point is, rumors are rampant and the fact won’t be made public until Sunday, December 6th.

In the meantime, Auburn coach Gene Chizik needs to do all he can to turn this thing around and prepare his team to win again. No matter who the opponent, no matter where the game is played, once the first kick off sails into the air, the Tigers have just sixty minutes to put their all on the field and make sure they don’t gallop into the offseason sunset with sharp pains and “what ifs?” tarnishing what was once a very promising season.
