The Chicago Bears have signed RB Adrian Peterson to a three-year contract extension that will run through the 2009 season.

After being selected in the sixth-round by Chicago in the 2002 NFL Draft, the Georgia Southern alumnus has developed into one of the Bears' most valuable and versatile players.

Last season the 5-10, 220 lb Peterson rushed for a career-high 391 yards with 76 carries and two touchdowns. He also registered 18 special-teams tackles, which ranked him third on the team. In 2004, he led the Bears with 28 special-teams tackles.

Also on Wednesday, Chicago signed WR Alex Bannister to a one-year contract and released CB Chris Thompson and WR's CJ Fayton and Mark Philmore.
