Chuck Bresnahan was promoted to defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Bresnahan, a Bengals' assistant last season, replaces Leslie Frazier, who was fired two weeks ago by coach Marvin Lewis. Bresnahan was the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders' division-winning teams from 2000-2002.

Frazier spent two seasons with the Bengals, and his unit struggled against the run. The defense ranked 28th overall in 2003, and was 19th this season, but 26th against the run in an 8-8 season.

"I'm enthused about the future of our defense, and about the experience that Chuck brings us," Lewis said. "I have great confidence in his ability to oversee the development of a unit that has shown us a lot of potential."

Bresnahan was an assistant with Cleveland and Indianapolis before moving to Oakland. With the Raiders, his 2002 defense ranked second in the AFC in points allowed and third in the NFL against the run.

In the 2000 AFC title game, Bresnahan and Lewis were opposing defensive coordinators -- Lewis with the Baltimore Ravens, Bresnahan with the Raiders. The Ravens won the game.
