Buffalo's 24-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday revealed many negative things about the 2005 Bills. However, the most troubling element of these Buffalo Bills may not be the offense, led by 2nd year quarterback J.P. Losman, or even the loss of field general Takeo Spikes on defense.

It may very well be the defense's inability to stop the opposing running game. Buffalo has had a really good run defense since 2003. That run defense was anchored up the middle by large defensive tackles Pat Williams and Sam Adams. However, Williams departed in the off-season for a bigger payday in Minnesota and his loss has really shown as veteran Ron Edwards has taken over alongside Adams.

Outside of the opener, when the Buffalo Bills defense held Texans starting back Domanick Davis to just 48 yards on 14 carries, Buffalo's run defense has been porous. They allowed the NFL leading rusher, Cadillac Williams, to rush for over 120 yards and one touchdown last week in the Tampa Bay heat and this past week against Atlanta, they allowed 221 yards and one touchdown. The Atlanta running trio of Warrick Dunn, Michael Vick, and T.J. Duckett (known playfully by Falcons fans as D-V-D) carved up Buffalo's defense leading to Atlanta's victory. Dunn ran for 97 yards, Vick ran for 64 yards, and Duckett ran for 75 and the aforementioned touchdown.

If Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray doesn't shore up this run defense immediately, Buffalo could be in for some rough sailing with Deuce McAllister, Ronnie Brown, Curtis Martin, and Corey Dillon on the radar in the next month.
