Extra day’s wait is worth it for Bills

The NFL has revealed one-sixteenth of the Buffalo Bills’ 2009 schedule, but they didn’t leave off the other 15 games just to be a tease. The team’s placement in the Week 1 Monday Night showcase means the pressure’s on to play like they deserve their sudden attention spike. They better use the 30 extra hours they’ve been given to prepare for the season efficiently.

Fans should set their calendars and alarm clocks for September 14 at 7 p.m., respectively: that’s when the Bills kick off in Foxborough against those hated, dreaded New England Patriots. For the record, sleeping until after dinner is served is the best way to cope with pre-game apprehension. The early evening matchup, along with the San Diego Chargers/Oakland Raiders nightcap, pair to serve as part of the NFL’s celebration of the American Football League’s 50th anniversary season. The doubleheader is apparently supposed to make up for nearly 50 years of disregard. The League has already taken an important first step: they’ve tacitly admitted that the AFL existed.

The AFC East/AFL Eastern Division tilt could be evocative of the rebel league for reasons greater than nostalgia: this has the potential to be a contest where both teams treat running as a novel afterthought. The league would certainly appreciate 600 combined aerial yards from what could be mutually dynamic passing assaults. Buffalo must do what it can to crush half the league’s dream: this defense must work hard to spoil Tom Brady’s return from injury/honeymoon.

The Bills will have a passing game weapon they didn’t possess last season, too. Of course, Terrell Owens is the true reason Buffalo was selected to be one of the participating former AFL squads. The instantaneous renown he’s provided has at least paid off with a lucratively prominent scheduling spot, and all that’s left is to endure is the ludicrous aggravation he supplies until game time arrives.

It doesn’t even matter if he’s not around: Owens can actually cause unrest with his absence. Namely, he either didn’t realize or care about the impression made by skipping the team’s first voluntary workouts. A player of his stature doesn’t have to attend, but a player of his reputation ought to attend: he could have put team unity at the forefront, but he’s still, unfortunately, acting like himself. Happily, there are now officially fewer than six more months to wait before finding out whether Owens’ signing is justified by his on-field actions. Until then, cope with the nuisance by leaning on meditation or booze.

Whether or not the Bills are ready to debut in prime time, the league thinks they are. Being forced to wait an extra day until the first regular-season game will be worth it for fans if they get treated to not just an air show but also of course a greatly-needed victory. This squad enjoys the prospect of concurrently ending their recent tendencies to get smacked by the Pats, find themselves embarrassed on national television, and lose in general.

It’s the absolutely perfect chance to terminate what’s effectively been a decade of supremacy by the Patriots over the Bills, not to mention a simultaneous pleasant opportunity to make Brady pout. If nothing else, this game spotlights why Bills backers can be thankful that, unlike Randy Moss, their team’s talented yet difficult wideout at least works hard. Buffalo already has that one advantage over their dominant foes, and now fans know the day and time when they’ll find out if they get to cash in on that along with every other hope.
