Not Optimistic About Bills Until a Leader is Born

I ponder the outcome of the Bill’s upcoming season as the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game is near on the horizon. The Bills and Titans will match up this year in the first game of the 2009 NFL preseason on Sunday, August 9th at 8:00 PM ET. It is shaping up to be a high profile event this year as the pro football community celebrates the 50th anniversary of the American Football League. It will be played on national television in prime time on the NBC network. Bills fans have additional reasons to celebrate as team owner and founder Ralph Wilson Jr. is a Hall of Fame inductee at this year’s ceremony as well as (arguably) the best player ever to wear a Bill’s uniform, good old no. 78, Mr. Bruce Bernard Smith. On a final commemorative note, this is also the Buffalo Bills 50th year of existence. Bills fans have so many reasons to celebrate this year.

This game could be a commemorative highlight as well, an explosive tribute to Bills fans world wide, a penultimate, physical punctuation mark on the events of the golden anniversary. It could become a tribute to the team’s owner, Mr. Wilson, who will most likely be witnessing his team’s appearance in the HOF game for the final time of his life. What greater honor could be shown to him than an all-out dominating performance from the team? The Bills could come out of the gates and show the world that they mean business, that to them this is more than just another preseason game. They could burst out with the no-huddle offense and showcase the team’s latest super star Terrell Owens. They could do many things to illustrate a loud, chest thumping roar. Wouldn’t anyone close to the Bills with competitive qualities feel this way?

My lack of optimism is best illustrated by what I believe the game will really be like- another typical pre-season conservatively called snore fest hosted by Bill’s coach Dick Jauron. He will likely play the starters for only a series or two. He will caution to guard against injuries. He will play it safe. I like to call this the conservative vs. competitive dichotomy. Can one truly be competitive if their dominating quality is conservatism? Does the word conservative really belong in any descriptive text when discussing the sport of football? HELL NO! Football is war on the field. The Bill’s coach lacks the very quality of competitiveness that is a fundamental requirement to be truly successful in this game. Conservative is the opposite of competitive! The competitive spirit will not be the dominating quality needed for this team until a leader is born. He could be on the team now, we just don’t know it. He must emerge this year and lead the team independently of the coach, lead them with internal guts and fortitude, the drive, the no-holds barred all-out gusto, the no-quit mentality, the I ain’t giving up ‘till I’m dead attitude of blood lust and battle cries. Who’s got it? They need it! Let’s see it!

What is life all about but to show all you have when it really means something? To make your mark on history? The Bills team will never get this chance again. The stage is set in the highest profile game for them in quite some time. Unfortunately, it’s hard to be optimistic. I’ll be watching, and will not complain if they prove me wrong.
