E-rock wants you to believe that Trent Edwards is not the QB of the future for the Buffalo Bills. I believe that he is. He offered all kinds of stats to convince you that Trent just doesn’t have ‘IT’. He also made comparisons to Big Ben in Pittsburgh as if Trent were dropped into the middle of a fully functioning football team capable of competing for a Super Bowl title. We’re also supposed to forget the fact that all of those statistics were accumulated without T.O. helping to draw coverage from Lee Evans or the addition of veteran Dominic Rhodes. Both players give us arguably the most depth at both positions within our division, if not the entire league. One could easily make the argument that those two things alone improve the offense and its capabilities.

Here’s why Trent Edwards will be the QB of the future, and the future is now.

1. T.O. is a legitimate compliment to Lee Evans;
2. Dominic Rhodes provides an additional option out of the backfield;
3. Re-vamped offensive line composed of hungry competitors with fire in their bellies;
4. Second year in the offensive system;
5. No-huddle offense will help to keep a defense off-balance;
6. A rookie tight end that runs like a gazelle;
7. Experience gained from 24 games.

The offensive line was an obvious detriment to the team last year. The LT and his considerable baggage are gone now. The half-assed attempts to protect his QB will not be the norm this season. Apathy at LG was also addressed with the release of Dockery. I agreed with this decision. I saw what should have been one of the best G-T tandems in the league continually be the origin of defensive mayhem. Likewise, the turnstile service provided by Preston/Fowler at center will NOT be missed. They were a pathetic attempt at deterring the nose tackle in a 3-4 Defense.

Yet with all those problems, Trent was still 7-5 when on the field. He doesn’t have a gun, but he puts the ball on the numbers. Last year during the pre-season he threw for an 80% completion percentage, routinely hitting guys in stride. We all know what he’s capable of. This is the season when it all slows down for him.

Earlier this month, Ron Jaworski, a Lackawanna native, was asked about Edwards. Very few people review as much game film as Jaws. He’s one of the best game analysts out there and played 15 years. He knows a little bit about the QB position and studies it with an insider’s edge. Here’s what he had to say about Edwards, "I think he's going to be a tremendous NFL quarterback. It's just a matter of being consistent. He's had some outstanding games and he's had some poor games and that’s what happens with young quarterbacks. Everyone wants to see Joe Montana on the field in his second or third year and that's not going to happen. I think the experience that Trent has now gained is going to pay big dividends down the road."

Trent has changes in place that specifically address the offensive shortcomings from last season. He is poised to take the next step and will embrace the opportunity that he’s been given. I Billieve that Trent will not only step up, but will grab this season by the throat. His accuracy combined with his experience will allow him to make better, quicker decisions this year. My prediction is that we’ll see him jogging downfield for the next play a lot more than we did last season. Mark it down… Trent will be seen as the Bills trigger man and offensive leader by the end of the Pats game to open the season.
