It’s that time of year when training camps are opening and the smell & sounds of football are in the air. If you travel to training camps to watch your team practice you know what I’m talking about. There is a smell in the air as you park your butt in the stands to watch. I can’t explain it, maybe it’s the smell of the freshly cut grass or the faint odor of icy hot or maybe it’s just imaginary all I know is I can smell football in the air. The sounds are easy to trace, the coaches yelling, pads popping and the players grunting thru their routines. Yes—Yes--Yes that means the season is around the corner and September can’t come soon enough.

Optimism runs high for each and every team and our beloved Bills are tied for 1st place. As recent past history has shown anything is possible, when the Phins can go from 1-15 to win the East title and on to the playoffs anything is possible. It most certainly can happen for the Bills this year and why not they have been putting the pieces of the puzzle together for the last 5 years. It is time for the BREAKOUT year for many of the players that the Bills have been nurturing.

We all know the O-line is under major reconstruction and it will take time to come together as a unit so let’s not kid ourselves into-- they will walk on the field and be a cohesive unit. The talent looks better on paper with the addition of Hangartner and rookies Wood & Levitre but will they be able to blend together, that remains to be seen.

Here’s my list of players that I foresee as finally breaking thru and becoming productive leaders or taking their play to the next level:

Defense:
Kyle Williams—set to make us forget about losing Pat Williams, playing next to Stroud pays big dividends.
Chris Kelsay---I just have a feeling Chris is due for a big year especially with Schobel coming back and the drafting of Maybin.
Paul Posluszny—3rd year second year starting he is ready for the next step will be extra motivated by having another Penn Stater on the D!!
Donte Whitner—he is the player that has to perform, with a better pass rush he will live up to the lofty expectations.
Kawika Mitchell—we only seen glimpses of his ability last year—Coaches need to let him loose!
Bubble players & concerns…..
Ashton Youboty—If he can stay healthy he could be a force but that is a big IF!!!!!!!!!!
John McCargo---Stiff or player, this is his last chance to make an impact, hard to take that a no#1 pick is nothing more then a secondary role player.
Leodis McKelvin—I still feel he will be a Pro Bowl CB, this year teams are going to attack his side of the field until he proves himself—a Learning Year ahead.
Keith Ellison—major concern, look for him to lose considerable playing time as the Bills try to up-grade but is a valuable ST player.

Offense:
Trent Edwards—3rd year, can he stay healthy? Has the makings of the smart heady type of player will rise to the occasion.
Lee Evans—with TO on the other side he might get less touches but his ypc and TD’s should increase.
Marshawn Lynch—a bull in a china shop, great POTENTIAL BUT LOUSY OFF FIELD CHOICES…
Bubble & concerns:
Roscoe Parrish---a HR threat as a return specialist---time to put up or shut up as a WR!
James Hardy—if he wasn’t a number 2 pick it might already have been visited by the Turk!
Gibran Hamdan—a career back-up is he competent or is he another Graig Nall?
Offensive line---so many questions so few answers!!!!!!!!!
Tight ends---time for Schouman or Fine to step up while Nelson develops.

At this time of year I can’t help to be anything but optimistic so bring on the season. Watch out Pats, J-e-t-sss and Phins. The Bills are coming. As Wyatt Earp once said “You tell 'em I'm coming! And Hell's coming with me you hear! Hell's coming with me! ~
