The NFL has been kind enough to finally recognize the contributions of the original AFL on this their 50th year anniversary of the start-up of the FOOLISH LEAGUE. I feel the need to honor the league with my most vivid memories of the Bills during that time frame, some are Good, some are Bad and some are just plain Ugly…

I was only 5 years old when the league started up but luckily I had two older brothers that were into sports and were excited from the get go on Buffalo getting a franchise. My brothers at the time were NY Giants fans---Sam Huff, Y.A Tittle, and Frank Gifford etc etc., myself even at that early age I was a Browns fan---Jim Brown, Frank Ryan, Gary Collins, and Jim Kanicki etc. For me the Bills were secondary, that all changed on a cold December day in 1963. My oldest brother took me to the Rockpile for my first live professional game to watch the Bills pummel the Jets. I sat there wide eyed as Cookie ran roughshod over and thru the Jets, Lamonica, “Golden Wheels” Dubenion, Saimes, Stratton, Sestak, Tom “Tippy “Day, needless to say a Bills fan was born that day!!! Even though I’ve been out of Buffalo for 20 years my obsession and loyalty as a Bills fan has never wavered. You can tell by my wardrobe, pictures on my office walls, sneakers, ball caps, license plates, flags, a Bills logo tattoo (there is a story behind that one) and the list could go on an on.

Here’s my list of memories of the Good---Bad and the Ugly…..I’ll try and keep it condensed because there are so many!

Good:
1) My first live game @ the Rockpile.
2) Going to see Joe “Willie White Shoes” Namath play
3) The Bills Championship years in 64 & 65-How I would have loved to see them play the Packers during that time!
4) The O.J. era, the man was magnificent --The Electric Company
5) Lou Saban, both stints—“There Killing Me Whitey There Killing Me”
6) Joe Ferguson playing on a badly sprained ankle an almost pulling off a playoff win against the Chargers
7) The Greatest Comeback in NFL playoff history against the Houston Oilers
8) 4-straight Superbowl
9) The Bermuda triangle
10) Kelly, Thurman, Bruce, Andre, Tasker, Biscuit, Talley, Marv
11) Never giving up—Don Beebe chasing down Leon Lett even though the score was out of hand.

Bad:
1) Wide right
2) 4- straight SB loses
3) The Donahoooo era
4) No playoffs since 1999
5) Monday night meltdown against the Cowboys
6) The Polian exodus followed by the Butler exodus
7) The Music City Miracle

The Ugly:
1) The dark years of the late 60’s early 70’s at least we got OJ
2) The threats of moving the Bills to other cities.
3) Back to back 2-14 seasons
4) Patuski, Cousineau, Tuttle, Booger Moore, Dokes
5) Kelly signing with USFL
6) There is more but I don’t want to be negative at this time of year.

I look forward to hearing from others on their experiences whether there Good—Bad or Ugly!!!!!
