Unless my Latin fails me, there have been 43 Super Bowls.

Now there are 32 NFL teams. I am not going to mess with the expansions.

The odds of winning all 43 Super Bowls, just by random flip of the coin dumb luck, are 1/32 multiplied buy itself 43 times, or, next to zero. Not surprising that a single team hasn’t dominated the NFL.

The odds that the Steelers won six Super Bowls, just by dumb luck, are 1/32 multiplied by itself 6 times, or about a nudge above zero.

The odds of not winning any of the 43 Super Bowls, just by dumb bad luck, are 31/32 multiplied by itself 43 times. That’s almost exactly ¼, or 25%.

So the idea that the Bills (or any other team since the Super Bowl era began) have never won the Super Bowl simply because they are unlucky, is bucking 4-to-1 odds.

So the questions are: Are the Steelers magically lucky to have won six? Are the Bills merely very unlucky never to have won any?

-or-

Are there other reasons, not involving luck?
