Lately it seems like ridiculing the Bills has become an easy pastime. To say otherwise has become blasphemous and a demonstration by one to be ignorant of the facts. As the day draws near I find myself unable to suppress feelings of optimism.

I watched the Detroit game yesterday and came away impressed. I know that shocks most of you, but there were so many positives that failed to emerge from the radio broadcast. Tasker and Ray Bentley called the game and Tasker continued to give the insight he gets from attending every practice. He said that he finds it almost unbelievable that the Bills aren’t using but about 10% of what they’ve been doing in practice. He mentioned Jauron’s approach of giving the players a rough framework to work within and how watching the one-on-one matchups in subsequent film sessions were the paramount issue in the preseason. He mentioned that the early 90’s Bills emphasis was also not on defeating the opponent, and how they often finished with one or two victories in the pre-season each year. Things that he disliked included not using plays that could keep drives alive, not throwing deep on 2nd and short, not showing gadget plays developed during the offseason, etc. He mentioned how ridiculous it was to judge a team on the preseason because it literally meant nothing.

The defense looks to be the deepest in the last 5 or 6 years. Maybin shows signs of becoming a gamer. He’s only 21 years old and weighs 250lbs, but he’ll develop into a playmaker. The draft picks from this year are all contributing and making plays, with the exception of the USC DB, who was released. The defense creates turnovers and show signs of being able to make more big plays this year. Nic Harris looks to be competition to Ellison and has a nose for the ball as he recovered a Maybin strip of the Detroit QB. Jarius Byrd looks like a solid choice over Ko Simpson and makes his trade a stroke of brilliance. In one point during the game he read the QB and left his guy early to arrive where the ball went just before the ball got there. Good instincts as we’ve been told… it was nice to see it for myself. Chris Ellis showed a lot of good moves and provided pressure off the edge. I think he’ll take that next step. This just in… nobody has run it on us between the tackles and the run defense looks improved and more than competitive.

Xavier Omon looks to be coming into his own place of comfort and runs downhill on every opportunity he’s been given. Shawn Nelson showed flashes of what is to come. The offensive line has had a lot of work and needed it. They will get better as the season goes on. Often this pre-season they played into the 3rd and 4th quarters. At least we know that the malcontent Peters factor has been lowered. I still hope to see it eventually shifting to Bell-Wood-Hangartner-Butler-Walker but they are getting time to get better against real competition. That will pay off when the real bullets start flying Monday Night.

I’m not afraid of the Patriot’s secondary. I’m not afraid of the Patriots. Brady is vulnerable and we have to bring a physical game. I think the Bills know it and will do so, releasing the hounds of hell. The offense has yet to be seen as Terrell Owens has only played 1 series back during the Hall of Fame game and Lynch won’t play until week three. I’ll go with Tasker on this one. They have been holding their cards close to the vest. Turk wanted to play them as is… while Jauron wanted to change a card. The Bills will give us a hell of a show in the opener. They will start slow and be down early… but many will be shocked… because it will be their first viewing of this year’s team.

Let’s remember back to Trent’s first NFL experience. He came off the bench after Wolfork went into JV Losman’s knees in the first quarter. He led the team down the field to a TD as a rookie. Belichick took him out of the game after that with different looks that confused him. How much has he learned since then? How well will the offensive line protect him? Will they throw deep on the first play? With no way to know what’s about to hit him… how will the great Bill Belichick act? Get your popcorn ready! We shall soon see.
