Oh how the Bills-Dolphins games use to be looked upon with such joy and anticipation when both teams were consistently in the playoff hunt. Kelly vs. Marino, Bruuuuce vs. Webb, Reed vs. Vincent, Levy vs. Shula (latter Jimmy Johnson), Hull vs. Cox, Smerlas vs. Stephenson, Joe D. vs. Fernandez, O.J. vs. Buoniconti, Odomes vs. Duper & Clayton, Talley vs. Jackson, Moulds vs. Buckley and the match-ups can go back the late 60’s in this once heated rivalry.

I miss the excitement this game use to bring Buffalo and its fans when the city use to be a buzz when the Bills played the Dolphins, especially when the game was played in Buffalo. During the 70’s when the Dolphins won 20 in a row the fans were still sky high when it was Miami week. Back in the 80’s when I bartended we use to run Squish the Fish parties where people would eat live goldfish to show their support, during the 90’s Salvatore’s Italian Gardens used to run excursions to the game in Miami & sell-out all seats, who could every forgot the fans lining up throwing snowballs at the Phins team bus, Bryan Cox coming out of the tunnel shooting the crowd the bird and of course the Bills beating the Phins in the playoffs in 95, 92 and 90. Who ever doesn’t long for the return of this type of rivalry just doesn’t understand the importance of it or how much fun it is!!!

Has this rivalry lost its spark? I must admit that I moved from Buffalo over 20 years ago and I’m only going by what my family and friends who are Bills fans tell me. The games have recently had a hard time selling out then the ultimate kick in the ass was when the 2008 game was played in Toronto—BOOORRRIIINNNGGG!!!!

As we all know the Bills haven’t been to the playoffs since “The Music City Miracle” in 99 and the Phins haven’t been much better with playoff appearances in 2000,01 and 08. This year looks no better (I know it is early) but the Bills still don’t have that marquee player that can change the flow of the game and the Phins look like they are reverting back to their 07/06 form.

I’m looking forward to the game this week but I don’t have the Bills/Phins fever that I have had in the past. I just hope it is because both teams have been Ho-Hum for so long and are offensive plodders with very little excitement. An not because as BB King would sing “The Thrill is Gone”……………
