The big question –--have the Bills hit Rock Bottom? Like people with addiction problems most don’t seek help until they hit rock bottom and have to admit to themselves they need help. Has Ralph and Russ come to that conclusion yet? Will they finally realize they need a top notch Head Coach and coaching staff to get this franchise going in the right direction? The fans surely deserve this for being near the top as the NFL’s most loyal fans.

Ralph has made this commitment in the past when the Bills hit bottom: after Lou Saban left in 65 the Bills floundered with the likes of Joe Collier, Harvey Johnson and John Rauch that trio had a combine record of 22-60-3 from 66 thru the 70 season. Rauch did want to make OJ a flanker-- thank goodness that never happened. After Harvey Johnson went 1-13 Ralph brought back Lou Saban in 72, who quickly turned the team around and made them competitive. His first order of business was building an offensive line which became known as the “Electric Company”. With Saban’s focus on running the ball OJ became a HOFer.

Unfortunately, the high strung Saban left in 76 after problems with the front office. Jim Ringo was brought in but the Bills again hit Rock Bottom going 3-20 during Ringo’s tenure. Ralph again went out and hired “Ground” Chuck Knox who was a proven winner with the then LA Rams. Coach Knox started slow going 12-20 during his first 2 years but he was building a team. The next two years the Bills made the playoffs and excitement was back at Rich Stadium. Knox left after the strike shortened 82 season to coach the Seahawks.

The Bills again hit Rock Bottom with Coach Stephenson and Coach Bullough leading the charge with back to back 2-14 seasons in 84 & 85. The Bills were lead by GM Terry Bledsoe who suffered a heart attack; Bill Polian was promoted to GM from his position of Director of Pro Personnel. Polian fired Bullough and hired Levy and the Bills were on their way to their greatest run in their 50 year history. As we know Polian left in a huff and Levy retired from the Bills on excellent terms.

The Bills have proceeded to go thru Wade Phillips, Greg Williams, Mike Mularky and now have the cerebral Dick Jauron leading the team. DJ’s days of coaching the Bills are coming to an end, how far the Bills fall this year is still question. The Bills are still making the same mistakes as when he took over, still losing games in the same manner and now look to be heading into a downward spiral as evidence by their lackluster performance Sunday against the Phins.

The big question is; does Ralph have the energy or the resolve to go after a coach such as Cowher, Shanahan or Gruden. It’s obvious that this team needs a drastic change of direction to become successful again. A change in coaching is a must and the front office needs to be shaken up. You can bet if one of the power house coaches decides to take the Bills job there are sure to be front office changes---John Guy, Tom Modrak, Jim Overdorf and possibly Russ Brandon better update their resumes!!!
