That the Dick Jauron 'Era' will come to an end in Buffalo is inevitable. The only questions now to be answered are when will it happen, and who will replace him? (Author's note: This is being written shortly after the loss to the Browns. Jauron may possibly be gone by the time this article posts.)

As to the first question, the Bills need to make a coaching change at the bye week. Will this have a meaningful impact on the season's outcome? No, not likely. The Bills will probably be mathematically eliminated by then. New offensive and defensive systems can not be implemented. The ability to make personnel changes are limited at that point. So why do it? Because a new HC can inject some enthusiasm into this team for the remainder of the season. He can direct the coordinators to take a more aggressive approach in play calling. And he can certainly improve game management and decision making. But most importantly, he'll have eight 'real' games to evaluate this roster and see who has the desire to compete and perform even with the season washed out.

Who will replace Jauron? An interim HC isn't a solution. It will appease the fans screaming for Jauron's head but will do nothing to get the reclaimation project moving forward. We all have our preferred outside candidates: Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shannahan, et all. We also believe that Ralph will never spend the money required to get that calibre head coach. But I believe that while money is a major consideration for Wilson, its not the primary consideration. No, its not the dollars, its the control. Its the control the 'A-listers' want and that Ralph will not relinquish. In fact, given a choice between two equally qualified candidates, I believe Ralph would actually opt to pay more - not a lot more, but more - to the one who was not asking for full decision-making authority if the other candidate was. So look for Wilson to hire a name coach that could both put fans in the seats yet work within Wilson's authoritative boundaries. And look for nothing to change unless he also hires a football guy as a true GM.
