With the 9th pick in the 2010 draft the Bills select????

As the draft creeps closer and closer I’m beginning to feel this is the most anticipated draft since the Bills took O.J. Simpson with the no# 1 overall in 1969. As a teenager back then I was wowed by watching O.J. run through college defenses and felt for sure he was the answer to all the Bills woes. Looking back the drafts of 68, 69 and 70 which turned out to be futile, basically yielding O.J. in 69 and a few nondescript starters such as Edgar Chandler, Mike McBath & Mini Max in 68 and 1 year wonder QB Dennis Shaw in 70. That’s it out of 56 players drafted. The Bills did draft well in 71 picking up starters WR JD Hill, OT Donnie Green, C Bruce Jarvis, WR Bobby Chandler and FB Jim “Bubba” Braxton but alas they still finished 1-13… Lou Saban was brought in and immediately made the Juice relevant; the pieces of the puzzle were in place with Braxton, Green and 2 excellent blocking WR’s in Chandler and JD Hill. In 72 Lou drafted G Reggie McKenzie no#2 and traded for LT Dave Foley but the finishing touches of “The Electric Company: came in 73. The Bills added 1st round picks TE Paul Seymour (a OT in college), G Joe Delamiellure, a 3rd round QB Joe Ferguson and traded for C Mike Montler. Who could ever forget the “Electric Company” blocking for the Juice, O.J. set the standard for which RB’s today are held to by rushing for 2000+ yards. Hell, OJ did it in 14 games which projects to 2,290 yards over 16 games.


It took the Bills 3 years to build the line through the draft and by trades; they have tried to build thru Free Agency but with very few results. With FA bombs ---Names like Villarrial, Teague, Anderson, Fowler, Reyes, Dockery and Walker should make the hair on Bills fans stand up with anger. To compound matters the Bills recently failed draft selections of
Jennings, Sullivan, Pucillo, Sobieski, McFarland, Pennington, Butler, Mertz and the worst of the worst no# 4 overall Mike “The Thief” Williams. At least the other players were mid to late round picks. I didn’t include Bell, Levitre and Wood because there is still hope that they reach their potential. It is no wonder why the Bills have been one of the worst offenses in the NFL---no line equals no consistent running attack and no consistent passing attack period.


Which now brings me to who will the Bills pick first in 2010? As of today I keep leaning towards LB McClain, how I would love to see him playing in Buffalo Blue but realistically I can’t see them not taking an LT in the first round. With McClain’s value on the rise and a few teams interested in him like the Jags, Giants and Phins the chances of the Bills trading down in the first round while acquiring extra picks seems ever more likely. With so many needs the Bills need as many of the top 100 players as they can get in camp.
