With the BILLS sitting atop the AFC East at 4-1, it’s probably as good a time as any to look back and further examine the teams they’ve faced thus far and also take a closer look at where they are league-wide in the stats.

Offensively, they look pretty good with their rankings as follows:

3rd in Total Points scored (32.8)
11th in Total Yards (379.4)
13th in Passing Yards (241.2)
4th in Rushing Yards (138.2)

Defensively, it’s another story altogether with rankings that look a lot like LAST year.

15th in Points Allowed (24.0)
30th in Yards Allowed (421.8)
26th in Passing Yards (283.4)
29th in Rushing Yards (138.4)

Their Rushing Yards Allowed could have much worse as the BILLS Defense posted the league high for YPC with a whopping 5.5 yard average!

Three of their 4 victories have come against teams rated in the Top 10 Offensively (Pats-1st, Eagles-3rd and Raiders-9th). That might help to explain some of the defensive stats.

At this point in the season, it would appear that the 4-1 record is more a product of going against some pretty weak defensive teams, and simply outscoring them. K.C. is 19th in Total Defense, the Raiders are 31st, the Pats are 32nd and the Eagles are 15th. The lone loss came at the hands of the top rated defensive team, the surprising Bengals (22nd in Offense).

Looking ahead at the next four games, one might want to check to see if the teams coming up are offensive or defensive threats. Unfortunately for the BILLS, they are in for a tough defensive string of games.

Giants – 20th in Total D (13th in OFF), Redskins ranked 6th (15th in OFF), J-E-T-S are 11th (28th in OFF) and the Dallas Cowboys are presently ranked 4th (6th in OFF).

It looks like the BILLS should be able to run the ball on the Giants (21st vs run and 18th vs pass) and JETS (26th vs run and 5th vs pass), but may have to sling the ball around more against the Cowboys (14th vs pass and 1st vs run). The Redskins appear to be a solidly projected loss at this point. For starters, the game is in Toronto, but their team is pretty well balanced defensively (8th vs pass and 6th vs run) and will be a real test.

I think Buffalo is fully capable of going 2-2 through the next 4 games to bring them to 6-3 on the season. The defenses are going to start to look a lot better than they’ve been seeing. Is Fitzy and company up to the task. I billieve they are!
