After years of struggling to stop the run and to put pressure on the opposing QB’s the Bills once again have made moves to shore up both problems. This past off season was a bonanza of additions we haven’t seen since they signed players such as Bryce Paup, Chris Spielman and Ted Washington during the mid 90’s. They helped carry on the winning tradition of the SB teams until their departures. The Bills did make a run of signing defensive LB’s Spikes, Fletcher, Posey and DT Adams in the early 2000’s but the overall team success was fleeting with the only winning season coming in 2004. As we all know the 9-7 record got the Bills a game away from the playoffs as they lost the season finale to the Steelers 29-24… The wheels have spun off since then and the Bills have not made it to the playoffs since 1999 an amazing string of 12 straight years.

Can the addition of DE’s Super Mario and Mark Anderson along with a healthy Kyle Williams team with excellent DT Marcell Dareus change the fortunes of this once proud franchise? There is also ample depth that has been added since Buddy took the helm with Carrington, Troup, Edwards, Merriman and from the holdovers from the Jauron regime, Johnson and Kelsay. The D-line is now a unit of strength and talent but will have to carry the defense as the LB unit and secondary are going through a continued transition from the Tampa 2 to bigger types of players. Again the LB unit has gotten bigger and stronger with the addition of Sheppard, Barnett, Morrison and young players White, Moat, Bradham and Carder. The secondary continues to turnover with the release of starters Whitner last year and Drayton this year as the Bills have added younger players Williams, Byrd, Rogers, Searcy and Gilmore to go with steady vet an fan favorite Wilson. Bryan Scott can play either strong safety or LB and along with injury prone McGee and the ever disappointing McKelvin might have a hard time making the team this year.

There is so much talent on the defense that it is hard not to get excited about watching them play but can they carry the team in the Offensive Style of NFL play?
