ORCHARD PARK, NY - Shopping for a veteran quarterback to back up JP Losman, the Buffalo Bills signed Kelly Holcomb. Terms were not disclosed.

After releasing Drew Bledsoe for salary cap purposes, Bills coach Mike Mularkey elevated Losman - the team's 1st round pick in 2004 - to the starting job. However, Mularkey also emphasized that he wanted a veteran with starter's experience to serve as the backup.

Holcomb, 31, spent the last 4 years with the Cleveland Browns and started 12 of 19 games. In 2003, he beat out Tim Couch, the 1st overall pick in the 1999 draft, for the starting job in training camp and threw for 1,797 yards and 10 TDs in 10 games.

Holcomb is best known for passing for 429 yards in his 1st playoff start - a 36-33 loss at Pittsburgh in a January 2003 AFC wild card game. He also spent 5 years as a backup with Indianapolis before signing with the Browns in 2001.
