Sunday, the Buffalo Bills made clear that they will be hiring Chicago Bears assistant special teams coach Charlie Coiner as their tight ends coach. Coiner spent the last two seasons working with the Bears' special teams unit.

Buffalo's incumbent tight ends coach, Mike Miller, is evidently out of luck at this point. Three weeks after new Bills head coach Dick Jauron began assembling his coaching staff, the news finally comes that Miller will need to find employment elsewhere in 2006. He spent the last two years on the Bills' staff, but his group of tight ends never made any significant impact on the field.

Prior to becoming their assistant special teams coach, Coiner was the Bears' offensive quality control man from 2001-2003. Thus, the move by the Bills to hire him is somewhat dubious at this point. Coiner, 45, may not have the experience necessary to have any sort of positive impact on the Bills' stable of tight ends. As unheralded as it may be, tight ends coach is a very important position on a coaching staff.

Coiner's largest influence will be felt on young tight end Kevin Everett. After missing all of his rookie year in 2005 with a knee injury, Everett, a former third-round pick from Miami, is expected to jazz up the Bills' unspectacular group of tight ends. Coiner will have a significant impact on how the youngster develops.

Jauron's staff is nearly full at this point. He still needs to find a solution defensively for the Buffalo Bills' vacant linebackers coach position. Just days after Jauron filled that position with Johnnie Holland, he bolted to Houston to fill the Texans' same position. Offensively, it is still unclear as to whether Jauron will bother hiring a quarterbacks coach. New offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild knows a lot about the quarterbacking position, and may take the reins.
