One of the finest special teams performers and humanitarians in the NFL, Buffalo Bills safety Coy Wire has captained the franchise's special teams unit to two consecutive No. 1 rankings in the league. The 27-year-old was nice enough to answer some of my questions on his role, the coaching staff, and a few other interesting topics.

A special thanks to Coy, of course, and his agent, Ron Raccuia, for helping to get the ball rolling on this interview.

Byrne: What are your thoughts on new head coach Dick Jauron and his defensive staff?

Wire: Coach Jauron has been there...done that. Many years have passed since our organization has had the luxury of having an experienced head coach. With experience comes a sense of confidence and certainty that permeates through the organization from top to bottom. An experienced coaching staff commands a certain level of respect from the players, and our team will benefit greatly from the change.

Byrne: Have you been impressed by the Bills' top pick, safety Donte' Whitner?

Wire: I'm very impressed with Donte'. He's a very gifted player, and I'm glad that he's on our team and not someone else's!

Byrne: How optimistic are you about your special teams unit finishing No. 1 in the league again?

Wire: I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't tell you the future...but I can tell you that the men we have on our special teams unit will stop at nothing to become the best that WE can be! I have a special bond with, and a tremendous amount of respect for the men on that special teams unit. We BELIEVE in each other.

Byrne: You've played for a lot of coaches, obviously. Where does special teams coach Bobby April rank among the best you've been taught by?

Wire: Coach April is special; and we all realize how fortunate we are to have him as our leader. He goes above and beyond the call of duty to make us the best we can be, and we recognize that. All of the little things (movie scenes, quotes, bonding trips, etc.) that he does to uplift us has obviously had wonderful results...record-breaking, actually.

Byrne: Do you feel you're an ideal character player for what general manager Marv Levy is trying to build in Buffalo?

Wire: I feel blessed to be a part of this team. We are acquiring more and more men with strong character, who truly love to play this game. It's tough to put a group of guys together who understand the value of chemistry and camaraderie, and to have our general manager, Marv Levy, making efforts to bring in men with character and substance is a blessing. We will benefit greatly from the changes being made within our organization and I'm thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of it.

Byrne: Lastly, Coy, please give the readers a little information on your foundation.

Wire: The Coy Wire Foundation has been doing some "behind-the-scenes" work. There is a time and place for big events, but some of the best work is done on a one-on-one basis - spending quality time with those who are in need. I do, however, have a good idea for a nice little event to have in Buffalo, but I can't give away any of the details just yet...it's gonna be sweet!
