BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The Buffalo Bills apparently are ready to grant Drew Bledsoe his wish. ESPN.com is reporting this afternoon the Bills will release the veteran quarterback on February 22.

According to the report, the Bills made a decision a few weeks ago to turn the starting job over to J.P. Losman, a 2004 first-round pick who missed much of his rookie season with a broken leg.

The Bills reportedly afforded Bledsoe the opportunity to return as a backup at a reduced salary, something the 12-year veteran declined. Bledsoe, 33, restructured his contract last spring. He was due for a $1.05 million roster bonus in early March, and a base salary of $3.3 million in 2005.

ESPN.com also reported that there were discussions between the Bills and Dallas Cowboys in recent days about a trade. If Bledsoe lands in Dallas, he would be reunited with coach Bill Parcells, who selected him first overall in 1993 while with the New England Patriots.

After spending his first nine seasons with New England, Bledsoe was traded to the Bills in 2002 for a first-round pick. He suffered a chest injury early in his final season with New England before losing the starting job to Tom Brady, who has guided the Pats to three Super Bowl titles in the last four seasons.

It was an unsuccessful three seasons in Buffalo for Bledsoe, who threw 55 touchdown passes and 43 interceptions while getting sacked an astounding 140 times. In 172 career games, Bledsoe has completed 3,449-of-6,049 passes for 39,808 yards with 221 touchdowns and 181 interceptions. His yardage ranks 10th all time.

A four-time Pro Bowler who threw for more than 3,000 yards eight times and for more than 4,000 twice, Bledsoe guided the Patriots to Super Bowl XXXI, where they were beaten by the Green Bay Packers.
