Coming into every college football season, there are certain players whom each team knows must perform well if they’re going to have a hope of coming up big. Such, of course, is the case with the Boston College Eagles. One of their players who must rise to the fore is Alex Albright.

Back in 2006, Albright was a three-star weakside defensive end prospect out of Cincinnati, Ohio, with good speed (4.66 in the 40-yard dash, to be exact).

But, of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a player is going to succeed. However, the good news is that Albright has a chance to be terrific for Boston College. You could see it during his first season with the club when he managed a respectable 17 total tackles and two sacks in limited playing time over the course of eight games. In 2007, however, Albright truly stood out, playing in 12 games (starting five) and accruing 38 total tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, and 8.5 sacks.

As the 2008 season approaches, however, the need for Albright to come up big is of paramount importance. With guys like Gosder Cherilus, Matt Ryan and Andre Callender gone from the offense, the defense will just have to be that much better in order to produce a winner. Everyone knows how important a pass rush is to that equation.

And Albright was the team’s leading sacker last season.

In fact, Albright is playing like a guy who knows he needs to lead. In every one of Boston College’s three spring ball scrimmages, he made a tackle behind the line, making him perhaps the best player on the defensive line during that period.

In the end, the team really needs Albright to play like an all-conference selection this season. The good news? That is looking quite plausible.
