As Boston College readies for the 2008 college football season and tries to get its offense on the right track, it would seem important to note a key aspect of team play. In order to play well, teams quite obviously need athletes. What’s more, a program like Boston College, which doesn’t encompass a college town-type atmosphere, would seemingly need to succeed in its own state when it comes to bringing in athletic prospects.

With that said, let’s take a look at the top five prospects in Massachusetts (minus tight end Arthur Fontaine, who's headed to Georgia, and defensive back Jim Noel, who's bound for BC) who haven't verbally committed anywhere yet.

1. Brennan Williams: This 6-foot-6, 272-pound offensive guard is from Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury. Williams’ dad played in the NFL for the Patriots, so he has good genes. Moreover, he’s considered a four-star prospect, the fifth-best athlete on the offensive line in the 2009 class, and the seventh-rated guard in the class. Further, he benches over 300 pounds and scored 1440 on his SATs, indicating that he’s strong and intelligent.

Beyond BC, Williams is considering Michigan and several ACC schools. He would be a huge pickup for the Eagles, helping them to continue their legacy of churning out excellent offensive linemen.

4. Charley Loeb: A two-star quarterback, the 6-4, 210-pound Groton is pro-style passer.

Other than the Eagles, the likes of Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are interested. Don’t be surprised if Loeb moves up recruiting boards with a good high school season.

5. Keith Bourne: From Fritchburg, the 6-4, 270-pound Bourne, a guard, runs the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds. On one hand, he’s not being recruited by many big-time clubs (only BC and Temple). On the other hand, there have been plenty of unheralded prospects who have done quite well at the college level.

Ultimately, stars don't always tell the whole story.
