Sophomore running back Andre Callender gained 72 yards on the ground and led the Maroon team to a 7-6 victory over the White squad at BC football's annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game played on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium. The event, open to the public, gave the fans and local media a glimpse into what the 2005 Eagles will bring to the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Senior quarterback Quinton Porter stood out for the White squad. Porter, who redshirted last season, was 25-39 for 231 yards on the afternoon. He threw two interceptions and capped off the day with the 72-yard touchdown pass to Will Blackmon in the final minute of play.

Quarterback Matt Ryan took the snaps for the Maroon team. The sophomore completed nine of 12 passes for 107 yards. He found the end zone once, completing a quick out to junior Taylor Sele.

BC's leading rushers of last season, sophomores Callender and L.V. Whitworth, squared off and posted comparable games on the ground. Callender, who played with both the first and second offensive units, posted 72 yards on 20 attempts. Whitworth, running with the white team, saw most of his action in the first half of play. He put up 70 yards on 17 carries.

Blackmon, a converted cornerback, put up impressive numbers at wide receiver. The senior caught 10 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. Sele, three catches for 38 yards, had the only other touchdown on the afternoon. Red-shirt freshman Brandon Robinson and senior Larry Lester each contributed at wide out, posting 65 and 50 yards receiving, respectively.

Defensively, the White squad's numbers stood out. Senior inside linebacker Ricky Brown led the team with 11 tackles. 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year Brian Toal made 10 tackles and had one sack. Junior Ryan Glasper and sophomore DeJuan Tribble each had an interception.

At halftime, senior cornerback Jazzmen Williams was named the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship, which is named after McGillis, a starting defensive back for Boston College who passed away from leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.
