The Denver Broncos will keep tight end Jeb Putzier in their lineup by matching the five-year, $12.5 million offer sheet the 4 year TE signed with the New York Jets last week. Putzier is a restricted free agent, giving the Broncos the opportunity to match any offer he received. By league rules, the team had 7 days to match the offer. If Denver had not elected to match the offer, the Jets would have to surrender a sixth-round pick. Putzier was selected out of Boise State University in the sixth round of the 2002 draft.

Putzier was tendered a 1 year offer worth $656,323 by the Broncos just before free agency started March 2. Since then, Denver has brought in former Detroit Lions' TE Stephen Alexander for a visit. Alexander, who caught 41 passes last season, played for the Washigton Redskins (1998-2001) and the San Diego Chargers (2002-2003) before joining the Lions in 2004.

The Jets saw Putzier as an improvement at the position. In 2004, Anthony Becht led Jets TEs in receiving with only 13 receptions for 100 yards and 1 touchdown. Putzier finished with a career-best 36 catches last season - averaging 15.9 yards a catch - to go with his first 2 TDs as a professional.
