Jake "The Snake" Plummer had been playing well. Prior to this past weekend, against the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, he combined for 401 yards passing and four touchdowns. Even better, he avoided the picks that had plagued him earlier in the year, successfully refraining from throwing any interceptions in consecutive games for the first time this season.

Then came this past Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. Three picks later, he has the team wondering about him again. Bad time to have doubts, as the co-division leading Chargers are coming to town.

So which Jake Plummer is going to show up this weekend? The guy they call, "The Snake," or the one that people in Denver tend to call something else?

That's the question.

Jake Plummer will have some help against the Chargers. First, San Diego will play without defensive leader Shawne Merriman, the best player on the Bolts' defense. (Merriman is serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.)

This past Sunday against the Bengals, San Diego's defense looked terrible without its second-year man. The unit was absolutely unable to get pressure on Carson Palmer, which in turn allowed the former USC star to throw for 440 yards.

For the Denver Broncos, the good news is that their offense will get the same break Oakland's did. Merriman will be absent; therefore, that excellent Chargers defense from the beginning of the year will not show.

On top of that, Denver will be playing at home.

The negative, of course, is that the Chargers' offense is playing great (it's scored over 30 points in four of the team's last five games).

So Denver will have to score to win. That will mean passing yards.

If Plummer plays well, the team has a chance of escaping this weekend in first place. If not, then that can't bode well for the Broncos' division title chances, as Merriman will be back the next time the teams face off. Not to mention, the rumblings regarding Plummer's job security will likely start up again.

Sunday, it's Plummer's time to step up.
