This past weekend's loss to the San Diego Chargers, in a lot of ways, was bad for the Denver Broncos.

First, despite a 7-3 record, the defeat sent them to second place in the division.

Second, they lost the game to the team that took over first place in the AFC West. Thus, the San Diego Chargers now have the inside track on them when it comes to a tie breaker.

Third, the Chargers were a team used to coming up short at Invesco Field at Mile High. Not anymore; and once you break the seal, well, it's never good news.

Finally, Denver lost to its division rival at a time when the Bolts' defense was dealing with problems. Imagine what the Broncos are going to come up against in Chargers territory on Dec. 10, a day when Shawne Merriman is playing and Luis Castillo is healthy.

Sunday night was definitely a tough one to lose.

All of that being the case, the Broncos need to get on the high horse immediately. Their night game at Kansas City on Thanksgiving couldn't hold greater importance to their season; thus, they're going to have to get that bad taste out of their mouth quickly.

They don't want to go into a two-game set against Seattle and at San Diego with a 7-4 record. If they did, the division lead might begin to seem like a distant memory; wild card berths might start dancing in their heads.

All bad news.

It's going to be tough coming back from a Sunday night loss that the team put its heart and soul into only to come up short. After all, it's a short notice game on Thursday. Beyond that, KC is only one game behind Denver and will be very hungry. Add in the emotions of playing on a holiday, and things could get interesting.

Head coach Mike Shanahan will need to work his magic. This is an important one; all games are. But again, with the loss to San Diego, the upcoming contest against the Chiefs now holds even greater significance than it would have.

This is one of the reasons why coaches get paid the big bucks.
