The Cleveland Browns released safety Robert Griffith on Monday as new head coach Romeo Crennel continues to overhaul his team.

Griffith, who was due a roster bonus on Wednesday, has spent the last three seasons with the Browns, which signed him as a free agent in 2002 after spending eight years with the Minnesota Vikings.

The 34-year-old started all 16 games this past season and led the team with 157 tackles while adding one interception and a sack. However, Griffith's age and Crennel's intention to upgrade the Browns up the middle made him expendable.

This is the latest move by the new head coach to remake the Browns, who are coming off a disastrous 4-12 season. Last week, the Browns gave defensive tackle Gerard Warren and running back William Green permission to seek trades.
