CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Browns signed free agent cornerback Gary Baxter to a 6 year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 6' 2", 204 lbs. Baxter had spent his first 4 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He produced 86 tackles with 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 interception last season. "Gary Baxter has very good size for his position, with tackling and coverage skills," Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. "His tenacious play and extra effort is also impressive. Gary's experience on a dominant defense and the attitude he brings to the game will certainly enhance our efforts on the defensive side of the ball."

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to play for the Browns and Coach Crennel," Baxter said. "I like the direction the team is headed and I'm really looking forward to playing in front of the 'Dawg Pound.'"

Browns general manager Phil Savage was familiar with Baxter after formerly working as an assistant to Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome. He recommended Baltimore select Baxter out of Baylor in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft.
