Quarterback Doug Johnson has entered a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. Johnson, an experienced quarterback who signed on with the Falcons in 2000, was a starter 11 times in four seasons. After that he was signed by Jacksonville, before playing with Tennessee during the 2004 NFL season.

The 2003 season was Johnson's most productive year. He played in 10 games for the Falcons and was a starter in eight out of ten games as a replacement for an injured Michael Vick. Over the duration of those ten games, Johnson completed 136 out of 243 passes for 1655 yards and eight touchdowns.

Johnson will be the veteran reserve quarterback on the team. He will back up Trent Dilfer who came to the Browns in March from Seattle. In Seattle, Dilfer started only 12 games the past four seasons.

Prior to Johnson's signing, Josh Harris and Charlie Frye were the only backups to Dilfer. Frye who was drafted in April is only a rookie and Harris will be playing his second year. Considering the fact that Johnson is a five-year veteran, he may very well end up in the number two spot behind Dilfer.

Specific details on Johnson's contract have not been released yet. However, it is highly likely that he signed on for a base salary of $540,000. Johnson will now be playing for the third team in two years.
