Among the 16 players recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday was former Philadelphia, San Francisco and Oakland running back Charlie Garner.

Garner's former Raiders coach Jon Gruden had Tampa Bay sign the running back last season to a six-year deal. However, Garner suffered a devastating knee injury that sidelined him part of last season and never really allowed him to compete competitively for a starting job this summer.

Garner spent all of mini-camp on the injury list, and only managed to struggle through three of the pre-season games.
Even though general manager Bruce Allen remarked about some of the released players eventually returning to the roster in the event that it was depleted by injuries, head coach Jon Gruden seems happy with his running back situation.

First-round draft pick Carnell Williams will be the starter; followed by Michael Pittman, Earnest Graham and Derek Watson, who all had strong performances throughout the pre-season.
