TAMPA, Florida - Brad Johnson and Joe Jurevicius, 2 of the stars in Tampa Bay's Super Bowl run 2 years ago, were released to help the Buccaneers get under the salary cap limit.

The QB and WR teamed on one of the biggest plays in franchise history, a 71-yard catch-and-run that led to a 1st quarter TD in the Bucs' victory over the Philadelphia Eagles during the NFC Championship Game played on January 19, 2003.

The moves helped general manager Bruce Allen clear more than $7.4 million in salary cap space. The team also cut linebacker Ian Gold and cornerback Mario Edwards, shaving another $6.14 million.

The team also restructured the contracts of several other players, including fullback Mike Alstott, center John Wade, safety Jermaine Phillips and running backs Michael Pittman and Charlie Garner.

Allen said the maneuvering also was necessary to ward off potential salary cap problems next year, adding the team entered the offseason about $45 million over for 2005 and 2006 and shed about $40 million the past few days. "This is not to say our cap work is done," said Allen, who will continue to try to create space to pursue free agents.
