The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have parted ways with Akili Smith. The former #3 overall pick in the '99 draft has not been able to find his niche in the NFL. Smith has yet to play an entire season in the NFL. His best year came in 2000 when he started 11 games, throwing for 1236 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

The Buccaneers agreed to sign Akili Smith only so that he could participate with an NFL Europe team, the Frankfurt Galaxy, this summer. The Galaxy's season ended June 4, so Smith promptly returned to Tampa for a minicamp last week. Apparently, the Bucs were not impressed with his performance overseas.

Don't be surprised if Smith fails to catch on elsewhere, and is completely out of the NFL by the end of this season.
