A Frightful Season for Steven King

Buffalo Bulls running back Steven King suffered through what could only be described as horror show of a season worthy of being mentioned in one of the books written by the author that bears his name (the author spells his name "Stephen"). But the senior will have a chance to turn things around in 2006.

The most horrible aspect of his '05 campaign is the fact that his team won only a single ball game all season long, a frighteningly-lackluster 10-6 win against Kent State in the second-to-last game of the season in which the junior ran for only 24 yards on 13 carries. For the season, King amassed only 532 yards and 3 touchdowns on 136 carries. Not good for a guy that compiled an impressive 4.7 yards-per-carry average and 7 touchdowns as a sophomore.

It could be said that King was outplayed by his backfield mate, junior RB Jared Patterson, but his numbers weren't really all that much better (374 yds, 2 TD, 4.2 ypc). In the end, King's and Patterson's performance were just a microcosm of the fright show that was the Buffalo Bulls football offense in 2005.

Hopefully, an older and more experienced Drew Willy at quarterback will help take some of the pressure of Steven King and help him return to his sophomore form. If that happens and if the offensive line can gel into a cohesive unit, King could approach or even break the 1,000 yard barrier. That would go a long way towards turning around a program that was arguably the most frightening in all of Division I-AA college football.
