Teamless Law would fit Cardinals nicely

Not surprisingly, one of the NFL's premier cornerbacks, Ty Law, remains unsigned. The free agent's great talent and credentials can't be denied, but his contract demands are just too high. Law's infamous agent, Carl Poston, continues to ask for far too much money for any team to give him a contract. Among the organizations interested in the future Hall of Famer's services are the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.

Eventually, Law's salary demands will have to go down. He was in the same position last summer, when he was, once again, asking for too much. The New York Jets finally bit on a deal for Law, but it wasn't as much as the defender originally wanted. He ended up signing the deal in August, which will likely happen again.

As it stands right now, the Patriots are the frontrunners to gain Law's services. Law spent the first 10 years of his career in New England, where he picked off a total of 36 passes and helped the team win a pair of Super Bowls. Law was released by the organization at the close of the 2004 season, and he left on bad terms. It was perceived that Law and head coach Bill Belichick were enemies, but they've evidently patched up their formerly poor relationship.

Although the Patriots are the favorites in the Law sweepstakes, it should be the Cardinals who make an aggressive pitch to the 32-year-old. This offseason, owner Bill Bidwell has, for once, opened up the purse strings and made a concerted effort to build a winner in the desert. Star running back Edgerrin James was the Cardinals' notable acquisition during the winter months. There were also other solid veteran signings, such as defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy and offensive lineman Milford Brown.

This season, the Cardinals are opening a brand new stadium, which has the team's fans buzzing with intrigue and optimism. Throughout their history in Arizona, the Cardinals have failed to draw many fans because the on-field product and facility were poor. Until this point, the Cardinals played at Sun Devil Stadium, which was built for college football, not the pros.

If the Cardinals were to sign the 5-11, 200-pound Law, it would go a long way in helping them build their way towards legitimacy. At the moment, the team is a popular pick to make the postseason for the first time since 1998. Law, who intercepted 10 passes on an awful Jets team last year, might be the final piece of a playoff puzzle for the Cardinals.

Second-year man Antrel Rolle and steady veteran David Macklin are currently penciled in as the Arizona Cardinals' starting corners. A Law acquisition would make the secondary much better, since he'd take over the No. 1 position on the depth chart, while Rolle and Macklin would compete for the second starting spot. Either way, the Cardinals would have one of the best cornerback trios in the league.

Many opposing receivers have fought Law in his 11-year career, but the notoriously great defensive back has usually come out victorious. If the Cardinals want to have a stellar 2006 season, they'll grab Law before the Patriots or Chiefs add quite an experienced boon to their secondary.
